Food Waste Friday, July 22, 2011

Hi friends!

It's Friday, the day I take pictures of the food our family has wasted this week in hopes that it will make us think twice about throwing food away and in the process, save us some money! I didn't come up with this brilliant idea myself; I stumbled across it on Kristen, aka The Frugal Girl 's blog and decided to join  in on the fun!

This week I think I have the most waste so far since I began writing about food waste at the end of June.
(Yikes!) I really have no excuses either, I've known this cream cheese was about to go bad for weeks, but just couldn't think of anything I wanted to eat it on. I really have to be in the mood for cream cheese; its not one of those things I am crazy about.  But alas, now it is gone bad, expired at the end of June. (yep, I kept it in the fridge for a few extra weeks in hopes that I might use it. Now it just smells weird, so into the trash it went!)

Next up is the remains of a chicken salad sandwich roll that my son, Ethan decided he wasn't hungry enough to eat..(usually we make him sit and eat it anyway, or save it for later but I forgot to put it back in the fridge). It sat out too long for me to save it- so it also got tossed.

(too bad, because it was really good too!)

Then, when I got out apples to cut up this morning for the kids to snack on while we went running, I found these yucky brown spots on a couple of them. I just cut them off and cut the remaining apples into slices...

Except we didn't eat all of those. Here are the left-overs. I might still eat them because I love me some apples and peanut butter and don't want to see them go to waste. But they might, so I took a picture just in case.

Lastly and by far the most gross;  Hubby cooked some  scrambled eggs this morning for us and we all had some except him. He went to get his serving and picked a few little bites out...until he saw a wingless fly crawling around in them! The poor creature had been crawling around on the stove and got it's wings singed off, and decided to climb up into the pan and see what delectable delights it could find in it's last few moments of life. Needless to say, the fly didn't survive any longer, and the eggs went uneaten.

The fly isn't in here- so stop squinting and trying to find it! :)

That's my food waste for this week;  hopefully next week I'll do better. How did you do??

I have a nice easy recipe to use cream cheese for (in the future). You take chicken breasts, cream cheese, and 2 pkgs. ramen noodles. Mix part of a seasoning packet from the ramen with the cream cheese and then either put it on the chicken and then roll the chicken up or I have started cutting a slit in the chicken and putting the seasoning stuff in there. Cook for an hour. Then make the ramen noodles like normal, put them in the pan with the chicken, cover with foil, and cook for 5 more minutes. Its really yummy.

That sounds good, Breanne, thanks! :) I can never think of ways to use it up other than on bagels or rolls.
